Saree Walkathon
The Saree Walkathon was completed by over 700 women of Indian origin, celebrating handloom weaves from the different states of India by walking, dancing, laughing and singing their way from Trafalgar Square to the Gandhi statue in Parliament Square.
This momentous occasion was curated in homage to their roots, their heritage, their ancestry and the stories and history that is documented in the clothes by the weaving artists that hand-make the sarees.
The fusion of Indian and British experiences marked with old and new friends and family alike on India’s National Handloom Day - and Akshita reflected on how much of a rejuvenating day it was to be engaging in the absolute pleasure that was photographing these gorgeous women from her home state, Odisha.
Attuned to her Indian heritage,, it means a lot to Akshita to be able to soak up all the beauty of both worlds with so many other people - and though she hasn't been able to visit all the states of India - yet - Akshita felt so encompassed in every states’ collective and individual energies and their ways of honouring their respective traditions.
