Shadowing - Executive Director

In July and August 2023, Akshita had the best time learning as much as she could from the Executive Director of ArtsAdmin, Ben Cooper-Melchiors.

This shadowing experience sparked from a spontaneous conversation about arts, leadership and the world, mixed in with some of her own initiative, Akshita and Ben figured out how develop the connection.

She relished spending time with Ben, gaining a deeper understanding of all sorts of things from management styles and adaptability, landlord responsibilities, operational requirements, financial management, fundraising, commercial functionality, programming, inclusive practices, paperwork demands, and most of all, how to enjoy all of that in a team that is sharing the journey with you.

This was such a timely, rewarding and exciting developmental experience in the work Akshita already engages with.

Stewarding

Since 2023, Akshita has periodically stewarded at Toynbee Studios, events including:

Artsadmin What Shall We Build Here Festival 2023 - Artsadmin’s festival of art, climate and community, returned for its second iteration from 28 June – 2 July 2023. Taking place in Artsadmin’s home at Toynbee Studios and across Aldgate East and the City of London, What Shall We Build Here staged an eclectic programme of talks, walks, feasts, workshops, performances and meditations.

Operations assistant

In her role as Operations Assistant at Toynbee Studios, over nine months from Summer 2024 to early Winter 2025, Akshita used administrative and organisational skills while supporting the day-to-day operations of a busy arts venue. As a first point of contact at reception, she provided a warm and professional welcome to all visitors, tenants, and contractors, managing front-of-house duties with efficiency and care. She maintained a clean and functional reception space, handled phone and email enquiries, coordinated post and deliveries, and ensured sign-in procedures were followed. This role included supporting the Operations Team, especially the Building and Facilities Manager, Medree Sarao, and the Studio Hires Manager, Samuel Skoog, with a wide range of operational tasks, including opening and closing the building, updating welcome materials, managing visitor logs, and maintaining accurate records.

Akshita contributed actively in upholding health and safety standards, supporting emergency evacuations as Assembly Point Coordinator and performing weekly fire panel checks and alarm testing. The role also entailed ensuring contractor compliance, managing access and security procedures, and maintaining up-to-date documentation, including first aider lists and key inventories. In supporting studio hires, Akshita supported liaison with hirers, set up rooms according to their requirements, and provided basic troubleshooting on facilities and equipment. She also assisted with bookings and scheduling using internal information systems such as Kiwi, helping to ensure smooth handovers and accurate staffing coverage.

Akshita contributed to general administration across the organisation, preparing meeting agendas, monitoring shared inboxes, coordinating Zoom links, and updating internal systems. Throughout their role, Akshita upheld Artsadmin’s values by promoting inclusivity, access, and care, and consistently worked to create a welcoming and supportive environment for staff, artists, and the public alike.

freelance producer

In her time as a Freelance Producer at Artsadmin, Akshita delivered and supporting key elements of the Artist Support Programme over a focused nine-month period from Autumn 2024 to Summer 2025. Working collaboratively with the Interim Artist Support Programme Producer, Nene Camara and reporting to the Artistic Director, Raidene Carter, Akshita contributed to the planning, coordination, outreach and delivery of multiple artist development activities, ensuring they were delivered on time, within budget, and with access and inclusion embedded throughout.

Akshita was co-responsible for curating and facilitating Developing Your Creative Practice (DYCP) Homework Clubs - a supportive, in-person space for artists working on funding applications. She oversaw event production, communications, and participant engagement, creating a welcoming and relaxed environment while offering light-touch guidance. Alongside this, Akshita co-facilitated Morning Producers, a monthly networking event at Café Alba designed to bring together freelance producers and self-producing artists. Her work involved liaising with internal teams, publicising events, and facilitating informal peer support.

Akshita also engaged with the planning and delivery of Lab, a two-week residency programme for artists at Toynbee Studios. She worked with resident artists in advance to understand and meet their needs, issued key information packs and evaluations, and provided hands-on support during residencies - including coordinating Lab Breakfasts, sharings, and guest sessions. She collaborated with the wider Artsadmin team to ensure a seamless, supportive environment for artists during their time in the building.

Finally, Akshita absorbed the editorial and curatorial responsibilities for the fortnightly newsletter, Artsadmin Anchor. This newsletter is a round-up of information submitted by a wide network of people on funding, commissions, platforms, calls for artists, seminars, workshops, courses, resources, jobs, opportunities, studio space and more, with over 14,000 subscribers.

Beyond programme delivery, she contributed to the smooth administration of the wider Artist Support Programme, during a time of internal reconfiguration, assisting with scheduling, monitoring, and evaluation processes, and maintaining accurate internal records. Her approach combined practical coordination, clear communication, and artist-centred care, helping ensure that Artsadmin’s values around accessibility, inclusion, and community support were upheld across all strands of activity.
